The walking tour starts at the farms in Deventer and heads towards Terwolde, you walk along meadows and farms back towards Deventer.
Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The place has been mentioned in 9th-century sources from the Diocese of Utrecht. A document from 877 refers to seven estates in Daventre portu (the harbor of Deventer). In 952, Deventer is referred to as a city in a donation deed by King Otto I. As the town acquired more rights and privileges over time, it was granted control over municipal lands by Emperor Henry V in 1123. Historians consider this the moment the residents obtained city rights. The city has the oldest stone house, the oldest walking park, and with the Athenaeum Library, also the oldest scientific library in the Netherlands.
Terwolde is a village in the municipality of Voorst, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The village is located on the left bank of the IJssel, about 4 km downstream from Deventer. Terwolde had 2,215 inhabitants in 2020, including rural areas but excluding the neighboring De Vecht.
Terwolde, Church
In 2010, Terwolde celebrated its 1050th anniversary.
In the center of the village stands the Church of Terwolde, dating back to the 14th century, which was dedicated to the saints Cosmas and Damianus until the Reformation. During a restoration in the 1990s, a large number of wall paintings created between approximately 1490 and 1540 were uncovered.
The village has an active community life. There are the village association, a sport fishing association, a sports club, an autocross club, an active branch of Jong Gelre, two choirs (Inspiration and Eendracht), a music association, neighborhood and playground associations, and a darts club.
In the center of the village, in the building where the village school used to be located, the village house now finds its home. There are also various facilities; shops including a supermarket, snack bar, medical center, and a small library. At the edge of the village, near the hamlet De Wijk, stands the windmill de Ooievaar. On August 31, 2015, the still-operating milling facility nearly completely burned down due to a lightning strike. The reconstruction of the monument was completed in May 2018.
