GPS Recording of 22 January 2021 And today storks present at the fen on the Galdersedreef
Here is a small extension via the Galderse heath from another walk of mine and also an extra large loop through the mast forest https://www.routeyou.com/nl-nl/route/view/5021290/wandelroute/kogelvanger-knuppelpad-den-deyl-moeke-kogelvanger Very nice walk. A variation between land with water rivers and forests. You sometimes see storks and many water birds. Good passable roads. Highly recommended. The storks that hadn't left were sitting at the fen on the galdersedreef
catering / Moeke on the Ginnekenmart at 0,9km : De Kogelvanger at 3,8 : Den Deyl in the mastbos at 13 km All these businesses are closed the day after my admission due to the Coronavirus !! SO TAKE PICNIC WITH YOU FOR THE TIME BEING, THERE ARE SOME POSSIBILITIES
The Mastbos is located south of Breda on the outskirts of the city, past the A16, near the Ruitersbos district in Breda South. It is the most famous and busiest forest near Breda and has great national fame. It owes its name to the many Scots pines that used to be called 'mast trees'. Among other things, ship masts were made of it.
The Mastbos is one of the oldest coniferous forests and after the Wouwse plantation the oldest cultural forest in the Netherlands. Count Henry III of Nassau-Breda had the forest laid out from 1515 with seeds from the Scots pine from Nuremberg in Germany. Before the construction there was a heathland in this area with a number of smaller oak forests.
BREDA (Neth.) - The more than 250-year-old separating beech in the Mastbos was felled on a Wednesday in June 2017. The tree was sick. Affected by the giant fungus and thereby dropped its branches. Because of the risk for visitors to the Mastbos, Staatsbosbeheer has chosen to remove the tree.
The large tree that had to be cut down in the Mastbos two years ago had great historical value. It formed part of the Square of Maurice. This was built in the 17th century by Prince Maurits to demarcate the area for hunting. The beech where thereby an important landmark.
The tree was also a recognizable place in the Mastbos for many people from Breda. But two years ago, to the disappointment of many, the tree had to be destroyed. The tree was sick and posed a danger to visitors to the forest. About two years after the felling of the old tree, on Friday, January 31, 2020, a new specimen of about 40 years old and 11 meters high was planted back
Experience
This year, Maurits' Square will once again be made more experienceable for visitors. Planting this tree is the first part of that. In 2021, the Square of Maurits will celebrate its 400th anniversary and will be given even more publicity.
