On April 20, 1896, little Andreas Schotel, the later graphic artist, was born in Rotterdam. This meant that in 1914 he was old enough to guard the national borders of the neutral Netherlands.
As a soldier he was stationed in Esbeek. When he was relieved of conscription in 1916, he went to study at the Rotterdam Art Academy.
He could hardly forget the Brabant country, the village of Esbeek and in particular the simple farmers, agricultural and forest workers, and so he returned in 1922 and lived for a short time near the fire tower that is still present on the main road to Reusel.
As an artist, however, he could not live on the proceeds of his creations, he returned to Rotterdam for a short time to come back to the Kempen after a year.
The wooden house that he lived in with his family in the summer months had a size of 2 by 2 meters. It has been restored and now stands on the edge of the large forest complex "De Oranjebond".
He did not gain recognition until later in life.
He died on May 29, 1984 at the age of 88. At his request he was buried in Esbeek.

Why now this story about this artist on a walking site?
In the vicinity of his work area, a walking route has been set out that is certainly worthwhile.
Also for people who prefer to take a tough walk in the woods than view paintings in a museum.
Here you can do both; you walk through a beautiful environment, you see on the basis of sculptures and "easels" where Schotel has been active and you can view his work in the "Schotelmuseum" (free of charge).
A surprising route !
