Through peat bogs and valleys

This route starts at the parking lot of Hugo's Pannenkoeken, Grebbeweg 1, Veenendaal.

From Veenendaal, located in the Gelderse Vallei, you look up at the slopes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. During this walking route, you can often see the tops of the spruce trees in the distance that tower high above the dark green edge of the National Park. Some 66,000 Veenendals live together on one of the smallest pieces of municipal land in the Netherlands. Yet there is still room for unique nature on this sparse surface. Hell and Blue Hell are remnants of the peat extraction that took place here in the 15th and 16th centuries. The route comes via the Ketelweg along the Hel nature reserve with the last remnants of raised bogs of the valley. Because of the tight jacket in which Veenendaal always finds itself, there has been, also recently, a loan with the neighboring municipality of Ede and new houses could be built in Veenendaal-East.

Before you pass through this district, you walk through a nature reserve in the making, with a nod to the neighboring municipality of Ede and the province of Gelderland: The Green Border. It will be a natural buffer between Ede and Veenendaal and will soon connect to the Binnenveldse Hooilanden, another new nature reserve that is being developed between Wageningen and Rhenen. In the coming years, the Green Border will become even larger in size, this route will surely introduce you. Along the Benedeneind and the Bisschop Davidsgrift, or the Valley Canal, you will return to Hugo's Pancakes.
