Utrecht took shape when bishop Willibrord founded a religious centre around the year 700. In the centuries that followed, the city developed into a religious and trading center in its central position in the northern lowlands. Many of the former times and castles have disappeared in city fires or wars, but if you look closely, some medieval treasures are still visible. Sometimes you have to turn around an alley or down a basement staircase. Here you will find hidden courtyards, leftover pieces of wall, memorial stones or statues, hidden in urban courtyards, pubs and bicycle sheds. This historical search starts on the centuries-old Dom Square, where the traces of the settlements of the Roman Empire are still visible.
