Circulation of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Relaxing bike ride through Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and the Meetjeslands Krekengebied. We start from the quiet border village of Koewacht. Through the wide flat country, along glittering creeks and on car-free roads we reach the beautiful Scheldt promenade in Terneuzen. From here the view over the vast Westerschelde, with its large and smaller seagoing ships, is breathtaking. We cycle over some sea locks of the Ghent-Terneuzen sea canal and then drive a few more kilometers through the industrial area. But once this is over, the blissful cycling starts on the dike path next to the wide Westerschelde.It is a wonderful nature reserve here on the sandy open parts with the thousands of birds that come here to breed in the mudflats and salt marshes. It is also a stopping place for migratory birds. We are told that seals can also be observed here from time to time. From after Terneuzen to after Hoofdplaat we drive right next to the wide Westerschelde with the large and small seagoing ships next to us and with a view of Breskens in the distance. On this route, peace and tranquility were ensured and the busy coastal zone from Breskens to Cadzand was avoided. Now we drive along quiet roads to the quiet town of Oostburg. A little later we drive through the picturesque and more authentic town of Aardenburg, the oldest city in Zeeland. This is followed by a special natural landscape, the Meetjeslands Creek Area. From the late Middle Ages, the sea regularly penetrated here and its influence is very tangible with the numerous creeks that are usually filled with salty water.
