Lake Lonneker is a Natura 2000 site. This means that nature is important at European level - it is not for nothing that there should be no activities around these areas that cause extra nitrogen emissions. Such an area requires good maintenance and that is what site manager Landschap Overijssel did in 2018. On the surrounding land, the nutrient-rich top layer was removed and nutrient-rich sludge was removed in the lakes. A plant such as yellow plomp can now grow less well and so sunlight has more free rein in the water: other aquatic plants benefit from this.

Around the lakes the Rotary club Hengelo has placed poems and verses by the Twente folk poet Willem Wilmink to promote the love for the Twente country.

Good walking routes have pivot points: tipping points that amaze you. You experience such a moment when the Lonnekermeer has fallen out of sight and the route suddenly undergoes a metamorphosis: wide sandy paths become small winding paths.

You are now walking through an area with the appropriate name De Wildernis. Sunlight falls in thin streaks on the forest floor and it's like you've been swallowed up by nature. Walking becomes sneaking. Zigzag gate through, bridge over, wide dirt road crossed and back into The Wilderness. It remains Dutch wilderness, so pleasant.
