Description by the author

The route goes counterclockwise and starts from the nature transferium at Heidekampweg (entrance Heidekamppark) just north of Stein. This means that in the first kilometer and the last kilometers you will cycle through the industrial zone of the port area of Stein. But aside from that, you cycle through rural areas for the rest of the route (where you may not realize it, sometimes cycling quite close to urban/industrial areas).

First, you cycle to Urmond, through the floodplains of the Maas, and along the Julianakanaal to Meers. At Meers, you follow a wide concrete bike path and later the Maasdijk with a view of the Maas. Then you follow the Julianakanaal and go through the floodplains to Geulle a/d Maas, past the castle of Geulle a/d Maas, and on to Bunde (you cross the Julianakanaal there).

You now enter the hilly area of this route where you first climb the beautiful Dennenberg, then descend the Biesenberg, climb the Visweg, and descend the short Raarberg. Then you follow the valley of the Geul with a very short ascent (Oliemolenweg). You cycle along the eastern edge of Maastricht and then climb to the plateau where Berg and Terblijt are located: the Kuitenbergweg (contrary to what the name suggests, this climb is not difficult). You again descend into the Geul valley and via In de Schreub (Vauwerberg) and the Kleverberg you climb to the plateau of Schimmert.

After cycling a bit on the plateau, you descend through the hamlet of Waterval (beautiful surroundings) and climb the Putstraat and several very short steep roads in Ulestraten. Via Kelmond you cycle to Beek (along the castle) and the hamlet of Catsop and then towards the hills at the edge of the Maas valley: following in succession the climb of the Hussenberg, the descent of the Moorveldberg (or Schieversberg, max. 12%), the climb of the Snijdersberg, descent Slingerberg and slightly further north the climb over the cobbles of the Maasberg in Elsloo.

The route then continues via a short steep descent and climb under the A76 to the area around the castle ruins of Stein (note: this is a popular walking area and roads may be scattered with twigs and leaves in autumn/winter). Via Oud-Stein, you cycle back to the nature transferium.
