The Jotunheimvegen is a scenic, 45-kilometer-long private toll road (gravel road) through the Jotunheimen area in the Innlandet province of Norway. It runs from Skåbu to Slangen along the lakes Sandvatnet and Vinstri to county road Fylkesvei 51. The road is only open in the summer. This gravel road runs through the heart of the Jotunheimen mountains. You drive here at an elevation of 1201 meters. The high mountains around it vary from 1553 to 1843 meters. Most of the mountains you see are over 1500/1600 m.
According to Norse mythology, Jotunheimen was once the place where the ’jotner’ (gigantic trolls) lived.
The Mythological World (Jotunheim): In Norse mythology, Jotunheim (also called Jötenheim or Udgård) is one of the nine worlds. It is home to the Jötun (giants), the arch-enemies of the gods from Asgard. It is described as a place of wild nature and mountains, and it is the setting for many adventures of gods like Thor and Loki.
The Physical Location (Jotunheimen National Park): The famous national park Jotunheimen in Norway is named after this mythical world. The name literally means "Home of the Giants". The dramatic, rugged mountains of this park—including Norway's highest peaks—fit perfectly with the image of the mythical, dangerous abode of the giants.
Prepare to be enchanted when you venture into this vast mountain region in Eastern Norway. You will find waterfalls, rivers, lakes, glaciers, valleys, and also some of the highest mountains in Northern Europe.
Jotunheimen houses the country's highest peaks; the Galdhøpiggen (2469 m) and the Glittertind (2454 m). Of slightly lesser height (2157 meters) is the Veslfjelltinden, part of the municipality Lom in the Innlandet province.
Jotunheimen is a vast mountain area in Eastern Norway with an area of about 3,500 square kilometers.
Here you will find some of the most iconic hikes in the country, including Besseggen, Galdhøpiggen, and Glittertind; the last two are the two highest mountains in Norway.
This area is also fantastic for cross-country skiers and alpine skiers, cyclists, and anyone looking to explore traditional Norwegian mountain cuisine.
The Historical Functions of the Road:
Connection between Eastern and Western Norway: Historically, the route served as a crucial connection through the mountains.
Access to mountainous agriculture: The road allows access to the remote plateaus and mountain farms (seter) around Lake Vinster.
Historical trade route: It was one of the few passable paths through the rugged Jotunheimen mountains, which was built by hand in the 19th century.
Along the way, there is a chance to see herds of Moose, and cows also just walk across the road.
The mountain peaks in the area still have snow in the summer; you can see this well when driving this route. It is recommended to wear layered clothing. I personally wore special hiking clothes that regulate temperature (2 layers + motorcycle jacket).
There is much more unpaved on this route than RouteYou calculates. This is because the gravel roads are not well indicated on the map.
