With peaks like Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Annapurna (8091m) nearby , this gorge is the deepest in the world when the depth of a gorge is measured by the difference between the height of the river and the height of the highest peaks on either side.
It is one of the main rivers of Nepal and a tributary of the Ganges in India.
The source of the Kali Gandaki is on the border with Tibet at an altitude of 6,268 meters on the Nhubine Himal glacier in Mustang. The Gandaki River basin is said to contain 1025 glaciers and 338 lakes.
During the monsoon, that is, from June to September, the river swells and the water completely reaches the banks.
Dozens of ammonites from the Upper Jurassic period can be found in the river bed. It is truly incredible that marine fossils can be found at an altitude of around 3000m
