Before 2012 road transport was not possible between Beni and Muktonath .
This meant that everything had to be done on foot and with donkeys. Donkeys play the role of transporters for us. People also carry everything and everyone on their backs. They transport everything: cloth, fruit and vegetables, sacked rice, potatoes, street chickens, cement , rebar.
When it rains, mud and excrement mix into a nasty mess.
Even at the Tatopani hot spring , where people bathe, donkey caravans pass just a few meters away. Speaking of hygiene...
