Moray ( Quechua : Muray ) is an archaeological site in Peru , about 50 km northwest of Cuzco on a high plateau of about 3500 m just west of the village of Maras . The site consists of unusual Inca ruins, mostly several concentric terraces, the largest of which is about 30 m deep. Like many other Inca sites, it has an irrigation system .
The purpose of these depths is uncertain, but their depth, design and orientation to wind and sun creates a temperature difference between the top and the bottom (a microclimate ). The terraces may have been used by the Incas after mining to study the effects of different climatic conditions on vegetables.
