Gdansk was a member of the Hanseatic League of north German cities. That Hanseatic League was a powerful organization. It enforced the end of piracy in the Baltic Sea, built lighthouses, built and implemented trade laws, and checked quality goods such as herring (for freshness), salt and peat (on ashes).
