Elvas

Description

Elvas is located just 8 km from Badajoz. The city was founded by the Romans, under the name Alpesa. During the reconquista, the city first fell into the hands of the king of Portugal in 1166, but then back into the hands of the Arabs. Eventually, the city became Portuguese in 1126. Since 1570, Elvas has had a bishopric. The city played an important role in the border wars of the 17th century.

The summers here are hot. They easily reach 45 degrees in the shade.

Elvas is a true fortress city. The fortifications are said to be the best preserved in the whole world.
