The cathedral of Our Lady of the Ascension is one of the most important monuments of Evora. When Evora was reclaimed from the Muslims by the Christians in 1166, construction of a cathedral dedicated to the Holy Virgin immediately began. The cathedral was consecrated in 1204. The building contains both Romanesque and Gothic style features and has been renovated regularly over the centuries. In the 14th century, a cloister in pure Gothic style was added. In the 15th and 16th centuries, a choir, a pulpit, the baptistery, and the chapel of Our Lady of Mercy in Manueline style were added. In the 18th century, the Capilla Mayor in Baroque style followed.
