Cacela Velha is one of the most picturesque places in the Algarve we have ever seen. A handful of small blue and white houses built around a white church, highly perched upon a vantage point from where you can see the wetlands as far as you can. A strangely configured but intimate cemetery where the ashes of the beloved ones are kept in little window boxes, all stacked upon one another. One restaurant and a bar that only opens during holidays. When you come here off season, the little village seems to be abandoned and overtaken by the stray cats roaming the streets. I suppose the situation is quite different during summertime. But nevertheless, this place is what we will remember the Algarve by. Do not forget to take the cobbled stairways downwards to the water and let your feet soak in the rapidly rising warm water as the tide is coming in. I'm sure you will never forget Cacela Velha either. The evening hours as the sun is descending, are the best time to visit this place.
