The National Military Museum of Elvas is located in the Portuguese citybordering Spain, in the district of Portalegre in the Alentejo region. It is only 10 km from Badajoz and houses the largest collection of fortifications-bastion in the world, which were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on June 30, 2012, as well as the entire historic center of the city. [1]
The abolition of border controls with Portugal, by the Schengen Agreement, has given a new impetus to this border city. Elvas is currently a city in constant development. Due to the short distance from the city of Badajoz, the Elvenses and Pacenses usually live as if they were a single city, being that the Portuguese usually go shopping in Spain and the latter visit the city and enjoy its gastronomy. This situation was legally embodied in 2013 when the Badajoz-Elvas Eurocity was created to promote joint growth and share infrastructures on both sides of La Raya. A large part of the visitors to the Military Museum are Spanish and, among them, most are from Badajoz. [2]
