The statue of the Unknown Soldier , in Lamego, was designed by the sculptor Júlio Vaz Júnior and the architect Álvaro Machado.
It was inaugurated in September 1932 .
It reads : "For the dead of the Great War. Glorious days".
Of the soldiers who left Lamego , we know that they embarked in 1917 and that they took part in the battle of 9 April in the area of the Lys . They also fought in Angola, as evidenced by the testimony of relatives of Manuel da Piedade, born on 27 July 1893 in Britiande, Lamego, who joined the army and went to Angola as a gunner, and that a soldier from Lamego named José S. Vaz died in Mozambique on 4 February 1917.
On April 9, 1918, the Portuguese troops experienced one of the darkest days in their history, with thousands of casualties, in the Battle of La Lys, during the First World War.
