The most emblematic feature of the Largo do Toural is the Toural Fountain.
The fountain was first located (since 1558) in this square. In the meantime, it was moved to the Jardim do Carmo (near the castle) until 2011, when new works were carried out in the city to host the European Capital of Culture 2012.
During these final works, the fountain was returned to its original location and to the exact spot where it had once stood, near Café Milenário, at one end of Largo do Toural.
A Renaissance-inspired granite fountain with three bowls, dating from the 16th century by the master stonemason Gonçalo Lopes. The fountain is crowned by an armillary sphere, below which is a sculptural element with four faces , on two of which there is an eagle, on another the Portuguese royal coat of arms and on the last the coat of arms of Guimarães, with the Virgin Mary and Child , with an olive tree to her right.
