The first reference to the Church of St. Michael dates back to 1216 by the Collegiate Church of Guimarães and it is estimated that this was the date of its foundation. The church was consecrated in 1239 by the Archbishop of Braga.
In Romanesque style, it is a church of small dimensions and architectural simplicity, but with decorative elements such as those seen in the friezes of the portal, in one of the arches and in the triumphal arch of the choir.
The history of this church is closely linked to the foundation of the Portuguese nationality . According to legend, Afonso Henriques, who would become the first king of Portugal, was baptized here. Although an inscription on a tombstone from 1664 mentions this fact, it contradicts the supposed date of foundation, during the reign of King Afonso II.
Inside there are several tombs of noble warriors.
