The most striking feature of this square is the large Braga sign , a popular spot for selfies. But also admire the beautiful architecture while you are here.
Directly behind the sign is the Igreja de São Marcos (Church of St. Mark), which has a characteristic curved facade.
The Braga architect Carlos Amarante is credited with a number of emblematic works of national architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, marked by the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical. These include the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte - declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 -, the Trindade Church in Porto (where he was buried) and the Brejoeira Palace in Monção.
The list also includes the former hospital and church of São Marcos, built on the square where the engineer today gives his name, in the heart of Braga.
