The Capela do Pretório de Pilatos (Chapel of the Praetorium of Pilate) is the eighth chapel of the Via Sacra of Bom Jesus do Monte.
This depicts the moment when Pontius Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd and condemns him to death . After his arrest, Jesus was brought before Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. Pilate could find no fault in Jesus, but the crowd demanded his crucifixion.
In the chapel we see Jesus , mocked and scourged, with the crown of thorns and a purple robe. Pontius Pilate , shows him to the crowd a raised platform while Roman soldiers guard Jesus. An angry crowd shouts: "Crucify him!". Pilate washes his hands as a symbol that he takes no responsibility.
This scene shows the injustice of Jesus' condemnation and how he silently accepted his fate .
