Cathedral Igreja de São Domingos, - Vila Real

The cathedral was built in the 15th century (started 1424) by Dominican monks from Guimarães.

After the creation of the diocese of Vila Real in 1922 by Pope Pius XI, the church was elevated to cathedral status in 1924 .

It is a remarkable example of late Gothic architecture in northern Portugal. The main façade is characterized by a portal with three pointed arches, surrounded by sturdy buttresses and crowned with a rose window . In the 18th century the current bell tower and chapel were added, with Baroque elements such as a square tower with balustrade and dome.

The interior is relatively sober , with wooden ceilings and limited decoration. There are some medieval burial niches and a Mannerist high altar brought from the Monastery of Odivelas in 1938. In 2003, modern stained glass windows designed by artist João Rodrigues Vieira were added.
