The square, also known as “Terreiro”, is the heart of the historic centre and is surrounded by some of the city's most emblematic buildings.
The square is named after José António da Silva Torres (1796–1869), a prominent military and political figure during the Portuguese Civil War. He played an important role in the defence of constitutional values and held high positions, including Governor of the Arms of the Douro and Minho provinces.
The surrounding cafes, restaurants and shops make it an ideal place to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere.
