The PR 1 – Vereda do Areeiro is Madeira’s most famous mountain hiking route. It crosses sharp volcanic ridges from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest peak, with spectacular views, tunnels and steep mountain faces along the way.

Highlight: the section past Pico das Torres, at 1,851 metres one of Madeira’s highest peaks.

The hike can also be done as a short out-and-back walk to the Pedra Rija viewpoint. From Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo, the route is currently accessible only in the direction from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, so it is not possible to return along the same path. The descent or return journey is via PR 1.1 to Ilha or PR 1.2 to Achada do Teixeira.
