Elizabeth Báthory lived from 1560 to 1614 and came from an influential Hungarian noble family. She was arrested and imprisoned in 1610 for the torture and suspected murder of dozens to hundreds of young women, primarily maids. Estimates range from 30 to over 600 victims. Báthory was never officially convicted but died after four years of imprisonment in her own castle. Her accomplices were sentenced to death.
The most famous myth is that Báthory bathed in the blood of her victims to preserve her youth and beauty ("The Blood Countess"). There is no hard evidence that this ritual actually took place.
Her crimes are said to have begun after an incident in which a maid combed out her hair, after which Báthory beat the girl; the blood supposedly made her hands appear younger. This is a legend that explains her sadistic behavior, but it may have been a fantasy after the fact. Some stories claim she had vampiric tendencies (drinking blood), but these were primarily shaped by fear and lore.
Mental health problems, such as epilepsy, rage attacks, and migraines, run in her family. This is believed to be primarily due to inbreeding. Rumors also exist that Báthory was abused and mistreated as a child, which could partly explain her behavior. Her husband supposedly taught her torture and violent "techniques," and violence was part of upbringing and punishment in the noble class.
Modern analyses point to severe antisocial and sadistic personality disorders. As a fabulously wealthy, dominant woman, she was accustomed to getting her way, in an era when cruelty was tolerated down the line in the nobility. After her husband's death, her cruel behavior escalated. Opponents may have tried to break her influence and seize her lands, so her reputation may have been deliberately further slandered.
