Ban Kao is a prehistoric settlement in Kanchanaburi Province discovered by Dutch archaeologist van Heekeren, one of the prisoners of war sent to work on the Burma-Thailand Railroad. He returned after the war, to find a Neolithic site. Fragments of tools and ornaments were discovered here. These were eventually collected and are now showcased at the Ban Kao National Museum Built near the Neolithic burial site. On display are specimens of Neolithic remains and utensils. Discoveries included skeletal remains, pots, axe heads, jewelry made from animal bones, and other artifacts dating from that period. The site of Ban Kao incorporates several habitation and burial localities, the most notable being Bang and Lue. Ban Kao was a work camp for prisoners of war used during the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway.
