Wang Yen was a work camp for prisoners of war used during the construction of the Thailand-Burma Railway in world war II
Picture: A urinal at a prisoner of war camp. The condition of the men suggests that the photograph was taken some weeks after the Japanese surrender. This example is typical of the urinals commonly constructed by prisoners of war (POWs) in all the railway camps. The large bamboo tubes, fitted with a metal funnel, carried the waste into a pit dug for this purpose. The G strings or lap-laps worn, were a common item of clothing to preserve precious shorts, as virtually no clothing was issued by the Japanese to their prisoners.
