Wat Song Phi Nong is located north from Wat Phra Maha That. Legend has it that Chao Sam Phraya, one of the three siblings of King Intharacha (r. 1409-1424), incited the other two named Chao Ai Phraya and Chao Yi Phraya against each other for the throne. Both, Chao Ai Phraya and Chao Yi Phraya died in combat on elephant at the Pa Than Bridge near Wat Maha That in Ayutthaya. Chao Sam Phraya became the 7th King of Ayutthaya under the name of Borommaracha II (r. 1424-1448). Chao Sam Phraya built one prang and one chedi for his late brothers in this location. Both are presumed to have been built in the early 15th century at the beginning of the reign of King Borommaracha II. The chedi and the 15 m high brick prang are among the impressive ruins still to be seen, with the remains of beautiful stucco decoration and interesting Buddha figures in three of the niches. Also of interest are a standing Buddha in a forceful poise with a wide face (late U-Thong style) and a stepping Buddha in the typical Sukhothai style. The head is in late U-Thong style.
