Wat Bot is a classic Buddhist monastery on the left bank of the Lopburi River in the Kong Thanu Sub-district of Mueang Lopburi District in Lop Buri Province. “Bot” means “ordination hall”. The site has two areas; an old area and a modern area. Wat Bot is believed to date back to the Ayutthaya era (1351-1767 CE) and was built during the reign of King Narai (1656-1688 CE). The monastic structure decayed over time and was restored in the reign of King Borommakot (1733-1758 CE). Additional structures were added during the Rattanakosin period (1782-1932 CE). Wat Bot received a royal granting of land on 31 January 1962 CE on which the modern monastic buildings were built. The area around the old ordination hall and chedi was registered as an ancient monument on 17 September 1992 CE.
