Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem is a 5.5 kilometer long moat marking unofficially Bangkok's old city border. known as the ratanakosin Island. Excavation began in 1851 by Chinese wage laborers during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV) in response to the rapid expansion of the capital. The canal runs parallel to the city's second ring canal, Khlong Rop Krung. It stretches in a bow from Chareon Krung Road, past Khlong Maha Nak, before ending in the Chao Phraya River, near Rama VIII bridge.
