Wat Khao Kaeo is situated on a hill outside Si Satchanalai, near the Suwankhiri hill, located within the old city. The ruin is basically a vihara constructed on a laterite base. Behind the vihara stood a laterite mandapa, which bear traces of earlier restoration or change. The left wall of the mandapa was built in laterite with recesses assumed to be decorated with stucco. Below the hill, construction material lies scattered around assumed to be a monk's residence. Green glazed tiles were found in situ, rarely found in Si Satchanalai.
