On the site of ruins known by the Lao today as 'Meuang Thakhaek Kao' (the old city of Thakhaek) several kilometers south of the present-day Lao riverside town of Thakhaek in Khammouane Province, was the city of Kotaphura (or Kotapurana). On the site stands Wat Pha That Sikhotabong.
Kotaphura appears to have been a Dvaravati-influenced (possibly Mon, but more likely multi-ethnic) principality of considerable cultural and political prominenee. Its important role as a centre of a regional Dvaravati artistic tradition to the eleventh century was emphasized by the French scholar Pierre Gagneux.
