Ko Chang Yutthanawi Memorial

Memorial of the Thai Naval Battle at Ko Chang is established on the seaside of Laem Ngop. It consists of the Monument of Krommaluang Chumphonkhetudomsak or Prince of Chumphon turning his face to the site of the Ko Chang Naval Battle, and the Museum Building that looks like a battleship. Historical facts on Krommaluang Chumphonkhetudomsak and the Thai naval battle against the French Navy are on display inside the Museum. The memorial ground is landscaped as a park. A celebratory fair in memory of the famous battleship is held during 17-21 January of every year. [Source: TAT]

The Battle of Ko Chang took place on 17 January 1941 during the Franco-Thai War and resulted in a victory by the French Navy over the Royal Thai Navy. During the battle, a flotilla of French warships attacked a smaller force of Thai vessels, including a coastal defence ship. In the end, two Thai ships were sunk and one was heavily damaged.
