Camp Ramasun in Non Sung Sub-district of Udon Thani was the home base for the 7th (US) Radio Research Field Station. Ramasun Camp was a Radio Intercept Station active during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1976. Its mission was to intercept, collect and analyse NVA and VC radio traffic. For this purpose the camp had a large antenna park. One of these antennas was a Circularly Disposed Dipole Array, a large circular antenna array used for radio direction finding also called Wullenweber antenna and nicknamed the 'elephant cage'. It was installed in 1970 in a contract awarded to F&M Systems. The antenna array of the AN/FLR-9 was composed of three concentric rings of antenna elements. Each ring of elements receives RF signals for an assigned portion of the 1.5 to 30-MHz radio spectrum. The array was dismantled at the base closure. After the withdrawal of the US troops from Vietnam the US military premises were handed over to the Thai army in 1976.
