The area of Wat Phra Borom Sarikathat used to be the old city of Chumphon. Chumphon has been recorded and known since 1098 as the border city of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The old site was located along the Chumphon River. A piece of sandstone was found here and is believed to be an eroded image of a Buddha, known among the people as "Phra Khoi". The entrance to the ubosot was built into a sheltered gate as part of the boundary wall (Kamphaeng Kaeo). A number of heads of Buddha images in the Srivijaya style are stored within the ordination hall. Besides a chedi containing relics of the Lord Buddha, there are also remnants of bases of chedis and ruins of ancient temples in this area. [Source: board in situ]
