Wat Phra That Doi Tung, Mae Chan District is a Chedi housing relics of the Lord Buddha. This is a bone that links the front shoulder to the lower throat portion under the Adam's apple known in Thai as 'hai plara'. There is a legend that over 1000 years ago, around B.E. 1454,
Venerable Phra Maha Kassapa Phera and King Achutarat, a ruler of Yonok Nakkaphan, and their officers had propitiated the relics which were brought from India to be enshrined on this hill. Many 'Tung' or religious flying flags, some as long as 1000 Wa were flown on the hilltop. The rims of the flags were waving in the area demarcating the holy area on this hill (Doi).
From then on, the hill has been called ' Doi Tung ' to date. Phrathat Doi Tung is the first chedi of Lan Na. Tung is a dignified and auspicious identity of Lan Na. Later in B.E. 2470, Kruba Srivijaya had the stupa renovated with the Lanna art style. The new structure was then built to cover the original one inside. [Source: Board in situ]
