Chronicles relate that Phra Phutthakosacharn brought a lord Buddhas' Bone relic from Pataliputra to give king Saen Phu, the ruler of Chiang Saen in 1295 CE. The king then ordered a stupa built to house the relic including a monastery with 300 teak trees planted to surround the complex, hence its name Wat Pa Sak or Monastery of the Teak Forest. It became then the residence of the patriarch. The temples’ chedi is of the beautiful Chiang Saen architectural style and the exteriors are elaborately decorated 12.5 meters tall with a base of 8 metres wide.
