Wat Chi Nang Kao

Wat Chi Nang Kao is situated outside the southeast city wall of Kamphaeng Phet ancient city. This old monastery has no historical evidence of its date of construction. This compound consisted of a vihara (the assembly hall), its structure covered with brick and stucco; in a rectangular plan, with front and back porches, facing to the east. Inside, the laterite pedestal is enshrined with a principal Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara. Most pillars supporting the roof in the vihara were made of wood, except the front and the back porch were brick pillars in square shape. Many roof tiles were also found. These artefacts suggested that the roof structure was made of wood and covered with terracotta tiles. Nowadays, only the pillars remain.
The architectural style and the fragment sandstone Buddha images found near the pedestal suggested that this vihara was probably established in the late Ayutthaya to early Rattanakosin period. [Source: Information board in situ]
