The old city of Tak was moved from the area around Wat Phra Boromma That at Ko Thapao in Ban Tak District to the west bank of the Ping River at present Pa Mamuang Sub-district in the reign of King Chakkraphat (1548-1569 CE). The Ping River was used as a natural defence line to withstand an attack of the Burmese marching over the Mae Lamao Pass. This location held the city pillar of the town until it was moved to the other side of the river in the second reign of the Rattanakosin Period.
