Road Conditions: Cycling from Phan to Wiang Pa Pao offers a rewarding blend of quiet rural stretches and more dynamic highway riding, especially if you're weaving through local landmarks like Baan Mai Huay Luang Tha Ho Lutheran Church and Pong Poo Fuang Health Center before merging onto Road No. 118.
Starting out from Phan, the roads are mostly paved and gently undulating, passing through small villages and farmland. Traffic here is light, and the environment is generally safe for cyclists. You’ll encounter occasional potholes and loose gravel, but nothing that should trouble a seasoned rider. The scenery is peaceful, with rice paddies and shaded lanes offering a pleasant rhythm to the ride.
As you approach Baan Mai Huay Luang, the route remains paved and quiet. This area is ideal for cultural immersion, with spiritual landmarks and local life unfolding at a relaxed pace. Continuing toward Pong Poo Fuang Health Center, the road conditions stay favorable—smooth surfaces, minimal traffic, and a safe riding environment. It’s a good spot to hydrate, rest, and take in the local atmosphere before the terrain begins to shift.
The transition from Pong Poo Fuang to the junction with Road No. 118 introduces more elevation and curves. While the road is still paved, visibility can be limited in foggy or rainy conditions, so caution is advised. Traffic begins to pick up here, especially as you near the national park zones and the Wiang Pa Pao district.
Once on Road No. 118, you're riding a well-maintained highway with wide shoulders in most sections. The surface is smooth asphalt, ideal for speed and endurance. However, traffic can be moderate to heavy depending on the time of day, and vehicles move quickly. Safety here depends on visibility and rider awareness—high-visibility gear, flashing rear lights, and daytime riding are strongly recommended.
The terrain along Road 118 is rolling, with some moderate climbs near Khun Chae National Park. These are manageable but can be tiring over long distances. The views, however, are worth the effort—lush forested hills and occasional roadside stalls offer both beauty and brief respites.
Destination: Wiang Pa Pao is a district in the southwestern corner of Chiang Rai Province. It’s a quiet, mountainous area rich in history, natural beauty, and some hidden gems that make it worth a detour—especially for travellers travelling between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The Khun Tan Range runs along its western border, with Doi Mae Tho (2,031 m) as its highest peak. It was initially one of the "mueang (city-states)" in northern Thailand. In 1905 CE, Wiang Pa Pao was merged with Mueang Phong and renamed Mae Suai. In 1907 CE, it was re-established as a full district under its original name.
Attractions include Khun Chae National Park, a rugged area with jungle trekking, waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints; and Wiang Kalong, an archaeological site featuring ancient kilns used for making terracotta ware. The kilns resemble turtle shells and date back centuries; Wat Phrathat Mae Chedi, a temple with a museum of rare artefacts and amulets that offers insight into local history and spiritual traditions. Lastly, the Mae Kachan Hot Springs, natural springs with mineral baths and egg-boiling ponds—ideal for a roadside break.
