Shira Cave Camp is called Cave because it is located near a cave that served as an overnight stop in the early days of Kilimanjaro climbs.
This campsite is the second overnight campsite you will find when using the Machame route.
For safety reasons, the ancient use of caves as a place to stay on Kilimanjaro has been banned by the authorities. Any climber wishing to stay overnight at this campsite must bring their own tent. The only building is a cabin used by rangers to check guests in and out.
The campsite is located on the Shira Plateau , one of the 3 plateaus of Kilimanjaro (the others are Kibo (= the crater) and Mawenzi). It is windy and it rains often .
Half an hour further is the much larger Shiva Camp 2.
The closest campground is Lava Tower Campground.
