The Shira plateau is one of the 3 plateaus of Kilimanjaro (the others are Kibo (= the crater) and Mawenzi). It's world heritage.
It is windy and it rains often . There is little vegetation and rocks. There are caves in the area that were used for overnight stays during the first days of the ascent. This is now forbidden. There are also routes aimed at reaching this plateau and no further.
The plateau is 13 km long and lies at an altitude of 3500 m, making it one of the highest plateaus in the world . The plateau is the result of a 500,000-year-old volcanic crater that has been eroded. Not far away is the Simba River.
