The river undercuts the canyon walls very slowly. After a while, slabs of sandstone will fall from the canyon wall and widen the canyon. If the river keeps on cutting in, the canyon will keep its narrow shape, because the undercutting can''t go far enough to make slabs of sandstone fall from the valley wall.
