This is the original area of Newtowne''s Cow Commons, the pasture land for grazing the animals. It was also used later on for military drills and where the colonists practised their freedom of religion and speech.
During the month of May of the year 1775, patriot soldiers from all over New England gathered here on the Cambridge Commons to form an army. On July the 3rd, George Washinton proclaimed the Continental Army and took command. From here, where he made his headquarters, he directed the Siege of Boston.
