The name Five Points derived from the five corners at this intersection. The neighborhood features in the book The Gangs of New York by Herbert Asbury, published in 1928.
In the 1970s, the book inspired director Martin Scorsese to make a film set in The Points, which he accomplished with 2002’s Gangs of New York.
In 1842, Charles Dickens made his first trip to America, and visited this spot.
