Xavier University of Louisiana is a private, historically black, Roman Catholic university in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the only Catholic HBCU and, upon the canonization of Katharine Drexel in 2000, became the first Catholic university founded by a saint.
In 1915, Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament established a coeducational high school in New Orleans. Ten years later, it was expanded with a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences to become the Xavier University of Louisiana on October 6, 1925.
