Situated in front of the Ark's entrance there's the Bolo Hauz, which is the only monument in Bukhara of medievel architecture. It consists of a friday mosque, a minaret and a water reservoir. The winter building was built in 1712 and the summer terrace with decorated ceiling and wooden pillars in the 20th century. The pillars are made from two trunks and are rather high, they have complex salactitic parts wich are decorated with geometrical and flowered ornaments. It is believed that the emirs participated in the friday prayers held in the mosque. The small minaret was built in 1917. The hauz has been the favourite place of the Bukharan people suffering from the heat. It provided the biggest part of the city with water, since there was no network of water streams to do so. Watermen carried water around the bazaars and houses in special leather bags.
