In the 16th century the Torre dei Venti was built as an extension of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican under Pope Gregor XIII. It was the observatory where the dominican father Ignazio Danti did his research for the new Gregorian calendar. In 1655 is wasn't used for this purpose anymore. So Pope Alexander VII ordered his architect Bernini to prepare it for the lodging of the converted Queen Christina of Sweden.
