Monemvasia

Source: F. de Witt

Monemvasia means 'single entrance'. That quality as a peninsula gave it a uniqye geographical and strategic position. In the 6th century, the Greeks from Laconia fled here from the Slavs. By the 13th century, it became the commercial centre of the Peloponnese. The famous Malmsey Wine was shipped from this point. Malmsey is the English name for Monemvasia.
